A possible threat on a MySpace page to bring a gun to West Nassau High School two weeks ago has turned out to be a hoax.
Authorities said Wednesday that charges against the MySpace user were dropped and another student was arrested for supplying false information to law enforcement.
On Feb. 21, a 17-year-old student was arrested on a felony charge written threats to kill or do bodily injury after the Nassau County Sheriff's Office was told of the perceived threat. A loaded shotgun, which belonged to the student's grandfather, was confiscated as deputies searched his home.
The school was placed on "semi-lockdown" and the student was placed on house arrest as the investigation continued.
Several West Nassau High School students heard rumors that the suspect was going to bring a gun to school and reported the rumor as if they had seen it on his MySpace page. Only one witness told authorities they saw the bulletin, but the witness later admitted to giving false information. — Adam Aasen
